How we choose
Every listed school clears the same hard requirements before anything subjective is even considered. Nothing is shown on this site unless we have checked it.
Valid public liability insurance
Qualified, in-date instructors
Current first-aid training
Strict student-to-instructor limits
Checked by us, not by a form

Who's behind Best Surf
PLACEHOLDER: We're PLACEHOLDER Name One and PLACEHOLDER Name Two, two Portuguese surfers who have surfed this whole coast. We built Best Surf because visitors arrive with no way to tell a serious school from a van with ten soft-tops, and the review sites do not help. Replace this paragraph with your own story.
More about usOne school per zone, chosen by two of us
We check insurance, licences, instructor certification and class sizes before any school appears here, and we say plainly how we make our money.
How we chooseQuestions people ask
- How is Best Surf different from Google Maps or TripAdvisor?
- Reviews tell you how a lesson felt. They do not tell you whether a school carries liability insurance, whether the instructor holds a current qualification, or how many students share one instructor in the water. Best Surf checks those things and publishes only one school per zone.
- Do schools pay to be listed?
- Yes, and it is stated openly. Listed schools pay an annual fee to be featured. Paying does not buy a listing. Schools are selected first and must meet every hard requirement. Schools that pay and do not qualify are turned down, and schools that stop qualifying are removed.
- Is Best Surf an official body?
- No. Best Surf is a personal editorial selection by two Portuguese surfers with years of experience in the water and in the surf industry. It is not a governmental or industry authority and it does not issue any kind of formal approval.
- Does it cost more to book through Best Surf?
- No. Your enquiry goes straight to the school and you pay the school directly at their normal prices. Best Surf never adds a booking fee.
- Why only one school per zone?
- Because a list of ten options is not a recommendation. The point of this site is to make one clear choice per zone so a visitor can stop researching and go surfing.
