Surf lessons in the Algarve
The Algarve is not one surf destination, it is two. The south coast around Lagos, Alvor and Portimão is warm, sheltered and often completely flat. The west coast from Sagres up to Carrapateira faces the open Atlantic and works nearly every day of the year.
The practical consequence: a good Algarve school is a school with a van. If you book on the south coast in July, expect to be driven west. Below is each zone compared, with the hand-picked school in the zones where one is listed.
This is an overview page. It has no listed school and no Best Surf badge. The recommendations live on the individual zone pages below.

Best time of year in the Algarve
For learning, April to October is ideal on the west coast: water around 19–20°C, long daylight and consistent small-to-medium surf.
Winter is when the south coast finally breaks and when the west coast gets big. It is still the warmest water in mainland Portugal at 16–17°C, but a first lesson in December is better booked in Sagres, where a sheltered bay can almost always be found.
Common questions
- Which part of the Algarve is best for surfing?
- The west coast: Sagres, Aljezur, Arrifana and Carrapateira. It faces the Atlantic and picks up swell all year. The south coast is warmer and calmer but usually flat outside winter.
- Can you learn to surf in Lagos or Albufeira?
- You can book a lesson there, but on most summer days the school will drive you to the west coast because the south coast has no waves. That is normal and it is included in the price by any school worth booking.
- Is Sagres good for beginners?
- Yes, and it is the most reliable choice in the region. Sagres has bays facing several directions within a short drive, so a sheltered, beginner-sized option is almost always available whatever the wind is doing.
- How warm is the water in the Algarve?
- About 21–23°C on the south coast in summer and 18–20°C on the west coast, dropping to 16–17°C in winter. A shorty works in high summer; a 3/2 wetsuit is the year-round default.
