Surf lessons in Porto and the north
Porto is the rare European city with a genuine surf beach inside the public transport network. Matosinhos is at the end of the metro line, sheltered by a long breakwater, and it is where nearly every lesson in the city happens.
Head further out and the beaches get emptier and more exposed: Espinho to the south, Póvoa de Varzim and Viana do Castelo to the north. All of them are colder than the Algarve and far more consistent.

Best time of year in northern Portugal
May to September is the beginner season: the swell drops to a workable size, the water reaches 17–19°C and the wind is lighter in the morning.
From October the north gets consistently powerful and cold, with 13 to 14°C water and a 4/3 wetsuit with boots on the worst days. Lessons still run all year at Matosinhos because the breakwater keeps it manageable.
Common questions
- Can you surf in Porto itself?
- Yes. Matosinhos beach is at the end of the metro line, around twenty minutes from the centre, and it is a genuine beach break protected by a breakwater that keeps it beginner-friendly.
- How cold is the water in Porto?
- Colder than the rest of Portugal: roughly 13–14°C in winter and 17–19°C in late summer. Schools provide 4/3 wetsuits in the cold months, and boots if it is really cold.
- Is Matosinhos or Espinho better for a first lesson?
- Matosinhos, because it is easier to reach and the breakwater smooths the swell. Espinho is worth the extra half hour when Matosinhos is crowded or too small.
- Do lessons run in winter in the north?
- Yes, all year, though winter days are frequently too big for a first lesson. Book with flexible dates between November and March and let the school pick the day.
